The AX50 is a modern era anti-materiel rifle of UK origin. It was developed in the late 2000's to replace the earlier AW50. The AX50 has a similar performance, but is more modular and slightly lighter.
The AX50 uses many design elements of the AX series of sniper rifles. Compared to the AX series the AX50 uses a much larger and heavier action and bolt design able to handle the 12.7mm NATO round. The action is made of steel and is embedded in an aluminum frame with side folding adjustable stock. The barrel is free floating and a two stage trigger is fitted. The rifle has a modular design and various accessories can be fitted to meet the user's needs.
The AX50 fires the 12.7x99mm NATO round from a 5 round detachable box magazine. As a bolt-action weapon the rate of fire is lower than semi-automatic designs. Accuracy is reported as very good, surpassing some of the competitive designs. The AX50 ELR variant is also offered in various alternative calibers such as .375 CheyTac, .408 CheyTac and .416 Barrett. These rounds are less common than the 12.7mm NATO, but have much better long range accuracy.
The AX50 has been adopted by several nations. It is mostly in service with special operations forces and counter terrorism units.
Original version introduced around 2010. Available only in 12.7x99mm NATO. Note the straighter early type folding stock design.
Updated version introduced around 2020. Multi-caliber system adding the options for .375 CheyTac, .408 CheyTac and .416 Barrett. Also features an updated skeletonized stock design.
The AX50 replaces the AW50 on the production line at Accuracy International.
